- A consumer-run research and evaluation organization.
- Well-honed expertise in collecting data, from consumers and family members in
the community, that is generally very difficult to obtain.
- Consumer interviewers are highly trained to conduct face-to-face interviews and
focus groups, and as consumers, are best able to establish a strong rapport
with those being interviewed. (Personal interviews are especially important for
people who are disenfranchised and have not historically been encouraged to
think critically and /or creatively about their care.)
- Leading nationwide expertise with regard to mental health community-based
participatory action research (as co-founders of the Boston Community Academic
Mental Health Partnership).
- Comprehensive understanding of the Massachusetts public mental health system,
having collected data on services since 1999, and a concomitant awareness of
community resources and legal regulations. As such, we are able to make both
geographic and temporal comparisons.
- We fight STIGMA by demonstrating that mental health consumers can carry out
responsibilities with creativity. The executive director and a large majority
of staff all have experience with mental illness.
